Taylor Fritz expressed disappointment, saying he felt he “let a lot of people down” by not being able to become the first male American to win a Grand Slam in twenty-one years following his defeat in the US Open final 2024.
Fritz lost against world number one Jannik Sinner in a highly anticipated match on Sunday, falling to him 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 in a straight-set. The last American man to win a Grand Slam championship was Andy Roddick, who won the US Open in 2003. The US tennis drought is still ongoing.
After missing out on his chance to become the first American man to win a Grand Slam title in twenty-one years, Taylor Fritz feels that he “let a lot of people down”. In the US Open final on Sunday, Fritz was defeated 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 by world no. 1 Jannik Sinner. The only other American male to win a Grand Slam title is Andy Roddick, who did so in New York in 2003. “I’m not too happy with my performance. Fritz, 26, said, “I feel like I almost let a lot of people down.”
“I’m really simply dissatisfied with my performance and some of my shots. It sucks.
“I simply wish I had performed better and given myself more opportunities. Right now, it’s quite disappointing. It seems like American supporters have long yearned for a men’s champion.”
Fritz never gave up on Sunday’s championship match, even breaking when he served to start the third set, and Sinner went on to win his second Grand Slam of the year, following his first victory in Australia.
Fritz defeated higher-ranked former runners-up Casper Ruud and Alexander Zverev en route to becoming the first American man to reach a Grand Slam final since Roddick had done so at Wimbledon in 2009.
Before the Italian exacted revenge in the California desert two years later, the world number twelve had defeated Sinner in their first match at Indian Wells in 2021.
Fritz responded, “The serve and the movement, massive improvements,” when asked what aspects of Sinner’s game had changed.
“I believed that in 2021, I could consistently get points off of his opening serve. Then, it was also much simpler to injure him from underneath. “Therefore, he’s far quicker and more adept at turning bends. He can now serve pretty well.”
