ICC T20 World Cup 2024 WI vs PNG opening match
After winning the toss West Indies elected to bowl first. In the previous World Cup teams like West Indies failed and looked out of form totally as they defeated Scotland and Ireland.
WI vs PNG was played at the Providence Stadium in Guyana, which is known for its slow surface. Apart from this in the last 13 years the highest total was 169. So, it was clearly shown that West Indies did not want to take risks and not underestimate Papua New Guinea, who won the last six games before the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 to qualify and they did that.
Though the sky looked cloudy there was no splash of rain during the match.
Akil Hossain & Romario Shepherd strike early on
Akil Hossain bowled the first over and we could see the turn and bounce from the pitch. Inexperienced batsmen from Papua New Guinea middled the ball with bats. As a result, Romario got the first wicket of Tony Ura, which is the only thread for West Indies in this match so far.
Sese Bau became the second batsman for PNG to score a fifty in the ICC T20 World Cup
After two quick early wickets PNG skipper Assad Vala & Sese Bau built a much-needed partnership of 50 runs for Papua New Guinea.
Sese Bau has contributed the most runs for his team as he later in this innings scored a fifty for PNG and wrote his name in history. He scored 51 runs in 43 balls, though it was a slow inning, the conditions were not easy to bat and hit over-boundaries. Sese hit the most boundaries for Papua New Guinea including six fours and one six.
In the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup, Assad Vala scored fifty for his team before Sese Bau.
With Kiplin Doriga’s 27 of 18 balls Papua New Guinea reached 136 after 20 Over
As the pitch was in the bowler’s favor not much help for batters, Kiplin tried his level best to put a fighting total on the scoreboard for his team with a strike rate of 150.00. Kiplin hit three fours in his short innings for Papua New Guinea.
Andre Russell & Alzarri Josep together picked up two wickets each for WI
Andre Russell also continued his IPL form in this ICC T20 World Cup 2024. He bowled in death overs with an economy of 6.30 in his 3 overs spell. Russell successfully picked up two wickets for his team also.
Alzarri Josep picked up two valuable wickets in a crucial time for West Indies, got the wickets of Sese Bau and the PNG skipper Asad Vala.
Johnson Charles went for a duck as Brandon King and Nicholas Pooran built the innings
Charles went for a duck in his first ball for a lbw. West Indies might be in trouble if King and Pooran did not show temperament and maturity to build a partnership for the West Indies.
Brandon King scored 34 in 29 balls with a strike rate of 117.24, including 7 fours. That was not the main character for what the West Indies were known for, the aggressive power-hitting in T20 cricket.
Nicholas Pooran played run-a-ball innings of 27 in 27 balls including one four and two sixes.
Roston Chase mastered the chase till the end
On a turning wicket where hitting a ball was not easy so far, there was only one batsman from West Indies who played his natural game, he smashed balls everywhere with a strike rate of 155.56 including 4 fours and two sixes. Also, he hit the last six for his team to win this match.
Roston Chase single handle took the match away from Papua New Guinea. In the middle overs, PNG bowlers bowled very tight overs.
John Kariko and Alei Nao bowled with a very impressive economy of 4.30 and troubled the West Indies Batsmen, making the simple run chase impossible for a while. Both took two wickets each. One of the best bowling performances in this opening match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 edition.
“For me it was just to take a bit of time to get in because watching on all the batters that today took a while to before they really got the pace of the wicket and in terms of playing the strokes.”- Roston Chase

ICC T20 World Cup 2024, WI vs PNG what are the positives & negatives?
In the opening match West Indies will bring some positivity to their dressing room as West Indies did look like the old days, the vintage West Indies those only knew only one thing to deal with boundaries. West Indies could easily won this match in the first 10 overs, with this explosive batsman in their squad.
In this match, West Indies look underconfident throughout the match. Surely They will improve themselves for the upcoming matches. The best thing is that bowlers took wickets inside the powerplay overs. Middle Order performed for WI, Roston Chase is in good touch. Russell could bowl the death over in the big stage matches.
Papua New Guinea first time played against the West Indies, but they fought till the last breath though WI indies smiled the last smile with the winning cause.
Papua New Guinea needs to work on their fielding, as they missed so many opportunities to save runs in boundaries, hope they will. No doubt their bowling is too good as they made this low-scoring game in a thriller event and gave a tough fight to the West Indies power hitters.
Hope they will do well in the upcoming games in this ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
