Rethin Pranav and Vaidehee Chaudhari won the men’s and women’s singles divisions, respectively with outstanding performances as the 29th Fenesta Open National Tennis Championship came to an end.
The competition, which took place in New Delhi, featured competitive matches and some of the top up-and-coming players in Indian tennis.
In the championship match, Pranav—who qualified through the qualifying rounds—beat Railways’ Nitin Kumar Sinha 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. Meanwhile, Vaidehee won the women’s singles title for the second time in her career, defeating Maaya Revathi (Tamil Nadu) 6-3, 6-3.
With precise baseline shots to start the championship match, 17-year-old Pranav swiftly built a 4-1 lead. However, Nitin responded with three consecutive victories to even the score at 4-4. Then, Pranav broke the serve of his rival to win the set.
Nitin only dropped two games in the second set as she resisted giving up easy. With the scores even at 2-2 at the start of the third set, it was a hard match. After that, Pranav won four straight games to win the championship.
There were significant crowds throughout the one-hour and thirty-minute women’s singles final. Maaya won the opening game, but Vaidehee stormed back to win three straight and take a 3-1 lead.
Despite losing the game, she maintained her momentum and used her excellent baseline shots to take a 5-2 lead. To make the score 5-3, Maaya won one more game. Then, in order to win the opening set, Vaidehee broke her opponent’s serve.
In the second set, Vaidehee kept up her barrage of vicious forehands as Maaya found it difficult to get into the game. The 15-year-old Maaya battled back to win three straight games after the Gujarati player broke her serve many times to gain a 4-0 lead.
But Vaidehee won the next game to secure the title, denying her opponent the opportunity to tie the match.
Aradhya Kshitiz of Karnataka defeated Shanker Heisnam of Manipur 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 to win the title in an exciting boys U-18 final. Prisha Shinde of Maharashtra won the girls U-18 title after defeating Diya Ramesh of Tamil Nadu 1-6, 7-6, 6-2 in the championship match.
