Let us examine the possible consequences for his career and the implications of the CAS update for the young champion, given that the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is advocating for a suspension.

Following Taylor Fritz’s defeat in the US Open 2024 final against Jannik Sinner, supporters thought the Italian’s doping scandal was resolved. His pre-event preparations for the Grand Slam tournament were clouded by a doping scandal, and it came to light that he had tested positive twice for anabolic agents in March but had escaped a ban. His defence that inadvertent contamination altered the test findings was accepted by an impartial panel.

However, WADA filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration of Sport during the final week of September, stating in a statement that “WADA is seeking a period of ineligibility of between one and two years.”

Following WADA’s appeal against Sinner’s acquittal, the CAS announced in an official statement on Friday that it would begin its investigation into the player’s doping history.

In a press release, the CAS stated: “The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has registered the statement of appeal filed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) against the decision issued by the independent tribunal of the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) of 19 August 2024 in which it was established that the Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner had committed two anti-doping rule violations for which he had no fault or negligence (presence of Clostebol metabolites, a steroid and a prohibited substance), and for which he was not imposed any period of ineligibility.”

“At this time, it is not possible to specify a time frame for the issuance of the decision,” the CAS continued. With the exception of the parties’ right to file an appeal with the Swiss Federal Supreme Court within 30 days for specific grounds, the CAS Panel’s judgment shall be final and binding.”

The question of how long Sinner’s punishment would last if CAS rules in WADA’s favor has also left fans wondering. Salvatore Civale, the president of the Association of Sports Lawyers and the Legal Aid initiatives for FIFA and UEFA, has responded to the question. ‘A few of months of disqualification’, he said, will accompany the ban.

“Yes, to be honest, I had few doubts,” he remarked in a statement made at the Quotidiano Sportivo. The World Anti-Doping Agency seeks to demonstrate and uphold its values. Above all, the goal is to uphold a sizable number of precedents in this area. It should be noted that there are very little indications of clostebol. However, I believe even a few months of disqualification could be risky for them—perhaps if the parties agree on it and spaced out during a time when there aren’t many sporting obligations.”

With victories at the US Open and Australian Open, world No. 1 Sinner had an incredible year. He is going to be hoping for a favorable CAS ruling.
